Excerpt: The 1987 Interview of Abel Solomon

The Solomon records had been meticulously kept for generations, though documentation of the incident was brief. Abel Solomon, sixth generation, was interviewed in hopes of gathering more information. The following is what remains of the original tape.

Interviewer: Do you believe the stories?

Abel: No.

Interviewer: None at all?

Abel: Of course not. Only the old folks around here still do.

Interviewer: So then tell me about what happened that day.

[Long pause]

Interviewer: Mr. Solomon, what do you think happened that day in New Silecroft?

[Long pause]

Abel: It was a long time ago. None of us can know for sure, but… I mean, let’s be rational. It had to have been a sinkhole.

Interviewer: A sinkhole opened up and didn’t leave a single ditch behind?

Abel: Alright. We’re done here.

Interviewer: Mr. Solomon, we need to—
